The West Coast League (WCL) is a collegiate summer baseball league founded in 2005, comprising teams from Oregon, Washington and British Columbia. The league is designed to develop college talent. As such, only current college players are allowed to participate in the league. Top college players compete in the West Coast League, which has produced dozens of professional players that have joined the ranks of both the Major and Minor Baseball Leagues.

The league will play a 54 game schedule with 9 teams from two divisions. An all-Star Game first incorporated in 2006 will be played in Victoria July 23, 2013.

While many of the players in this league believe they will make it to the majors and many will, they will experience what it is like for them in minor pro to ride the bus and play every day and at the same time to use wood bats, something that does not occur in college.

The opening day matchup saw MLB Prospect (HarbourCats) Nick Pivetta go up against Marc-Andre Habeck (Kelowna Falcans) with Pivetta of the HarbourCats coming out on top, 8-6.

Nick Pivetta, a Victoria native, played for the Victoria Eagles under coach Gautam Srivistava of the BC Premier League receiving honorable mention in the "Perfect Game" pre-Season All-American Underclass High School Awards. Also a member of Team Canada 2009 and 2011.

As a MLB draft Prospect, Nick was selected in the 4th round of the 2013 Major League Baseball draft June 7, 2013 by the Washington Nationals.

HarbourCats win their home opener series 3-0.
